A colleague from another organization was telling me about his summer interns. Unfortunately, his organization’s policy is not to publish intern work with a stand-alone byline. I’m so thankful for the journalism internships I had where I got to do real work. Getting thrown into the deep end may not be fun at first, but there’s no substitute for real responsibility.

My friend LC brought her toddler to visit me at the pool today. It was fun watching him get acclimated to the baby pool – he had to sit on the side for half an hour before testing it out, but soon discovered he loved it.
What do you love now that it took awhile to warm up to?

Having a candy jar on one’s desk serves at least two purposes. It provides a nice place to hold treats, and it brings colleagues in for a chat.

If the Internet were all research, that would be dull. Where would we be without Catalog Living, The Bloggess (warning: language), or Cake Wrecks?
What’s your favorite work-break website?

My friend DD, who runs marathons and triathalons (read: crazy), was telling me that she went to get a pedicure and part of the deal was making her feet all soft and nice. Which seemed like a great idea at the time, until she went running again. There was a big “OUCH!” as she discovered those calluses had been protecting her.
Sometimes experiences help build us a natural layer of protection for the future.

It’s a blessing to be able to take road trips without worrying about breaking down. I’m very thankful we have a car that runs and we can fit enough stuff in it to get away!

There’s just nothing like skimming the water. Today we rented a boat and took a bunch of family members out for a maritime drive.

Today was the first day of our beach vacation. My favorite part of the day came before we even went to the beach, though. We were settling into our rental house, and I started throwing the Sky-O with my husband. Indoors. (Things you do at a rental house.) We were waiting for some family to get back from the grocery store, and we just passed the time with this little flying ring. It was incredibly relaxing. A great reminder that sometimes we just need to get away from work – and play.

Finding a rental house big enough for 11 people with two weeks’ notice in July at the beach: impossible. Right? But somehow, my mother-in-law did it. Fantastic.
